For most leaders, the idea of team building involves issuing a series of instructions that must be promptly complied by the subordinates. You would not be creating a team by adopting such an approach. Rather, you would simply be creating a hierarchy where information flows in one direction - downward.

Well, some subordinates may adopt a superiority complex but those who are really interested in sticking to your firm will respect you for your understanding and maturity.
Getting rid of employees who do not respect their seniors is not a difficult task. However, convincing employees to open their minds and contribute to the overall knowledge of the top management is a far tougher task. You should focus on these tasks to ensure that the team building exercises are not treated as a formality and provide real results.
